Why I like working in an academic setting
I love working at SVC because of the incredible energy and commitment of our students, and the diversity of ideas, backgrounds and goals they embody.
Favorite Book
Whatever I'm reading at the present, I don't relate to the idea of picking a favorite. For me, it's all about the broader experience of context, whether it's clutching a copy of West with the Night by Beryl Markham while journeying to my Irish homeland or devouring Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma on a cold winter's night after finishing our farm's annual seed order.
Favorite film/play/dance/exhibit
Again, I don't pick favorites. A recent film pick I'd recommend is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, directed by filmmaker and artist Julian Schnabel. It's also an excellent book, profoundly communicating the potential of the human mind to overcome obstacles. I also recommend regular visits to the Bennington Museum's local artist exhibition gallery. It's a good venue for seeing work of the highest caliber that happens to be made locally. Similarly, the Vermont Arts Exchange is another good venue for contemporary art. They also have an excellent music series throughout the winter in their happening basement/club-like warehouse space. Check it out.
Best part of being at SVC
Imagine the scene: grand white tent, sweeping green lawn, views to distant mountains peaks, and commencing students in their black robes and mortarboards: Graduation Day at Southern Vermont College. It is hugely inspiring to see our students (and their families!) realize this important goal. And yet, there is nothing quite like that quiet moment when one of our department's work-study students pops into the office to report she has just aced the accounting exam that had been weighing heavily upon her. Sharing in the celebration of achievement is a wonderful part of this magical place.
