It is hard to believe that we are finished with the Community Dinner series. We have enjoyed so much meeting with Mai and Kora, and will miss seeing everyone. Annah has enjoyed getting to see a bit of college life, as well as engaging in conversation about all the classes and activities at the college. Eating dinner together as a family whenever possible is wonderful, and anything that can be done to encourage this is great. Thank you for letting us participate.

The lecture was interesting and informative. I really enjoyed all the great tips on how to cook vegetables. At home, my mother and father do all the cooking. I would bake casually for desserts. I'm not much of a cooker, so that's why.

The Variety of food that was provided for our family to cook was GREAT! We decided to have Raina and Hannah to join us for dinner! We decided to make a spinach salad and include the nuts, cranberries, and feta cheese and gave a gentle toss! The sweet potatoes we decided to make sweet potatoe fries and yams (sweet potatoeo). The chicken was marinated in teriaki sauce and grilled on each side for 6 minutes. WOW! DINNER WAS FANTASTIC!!! Thrn came dessert! We simply put the cookies into the oven. When we done with dinner the cookies were still warm!!!

Growing up my sister and I would alternate nightly; one setting the table and the other clearing and cleaning. My mom always did the cooking and she still rarely shares that responsibility when we have family meals (even when help is offered). This is probably why I always do the cooking at my home. My family will get their own plates & drinks and clear their own settings but the bulk of the cleanup is still done by me. Not having to shop and plan the meal sent home with us this last dinner was nice. I made my Marta's chicken, oven fried sweet potatos, and the spinach salad. The cookies were a real treat since it's not something I would make on an ordinary night.

We enjoyed our planned dinner. It was such a treat not to have to think of what to make. Spinach salad is one of our favorites. We cooked the sweet potatoes into a side dish with curry seasoning and with the rest made sweet potatoe, chocolate cake. We had grilled chicken sandwiches as our main course. It was great to meet up with everyone again and we enjoyed the presentation on how to apply to colleges and what to look for when applying. Thanks!

I was unfortunately unable to make it to this portion of our CCDS gathering, however, this topic does cause me to reflect on my family's mealtime practices. I grew up in a home that greatly emphasizes healthy and conscious eating. As much as financially possible, my family chooses to buy foods from local farmers, and focus on eating healthy food items such as grains, vegetables, fruits, etc. Because of this, I grew up enjoying the foods that are better for me, though on occasion i do enjoy a little junk food! As far as preparing the meal, I feel that my family shares that responsibility pretty evenly, and we all take turns preparing meals. The one consistent rule that we have regarding meals is this: Whoever did the cooking, doesn't have to wash the dishes!

I enjoyed learning new ways to prepare and cook our vegetables from Cara's visit. I also thought her tips on healthy snacks was very helpful. Our family is always looking for good idea's to watch our weight and make it easier for us to stick to our goals. We are also trying to plan our meals for the week so we don't have to worry about what we are making for dinner. We plan it out and then we can prepare what we have on our list. Duffy is usually home from work 1st and start dinner, but sometimes Olivia will start it for us, if she's not working that night. As for clean up, we all take turns and the same with the dishes too. Nobody really likes that job so we take turns with it, ha ha..

When it comes to portion control i think i have one of the best philosophies, which is to just eat when you are hungry. ever since i came to SVC i implied this and i think it has kept me at a healthy weight. When it comes to being at home i try my best to help out with making dinner whenever i can. i usually set up the table and help cut food as well as bake it.

I really enjoyed listening to Cara's lecture. I also try to bring along trail mix on long drives to help keep me awake. In my family my Grandmother and I share the responsibilities of setting the table and making dinner. We often rotate based on who is cooking the meal that night. We always plan out our meals the week before that way we don't buy a ton of food at the grocery store and then waste it.
