areas of expertise
I'm not really comfortable calling myself an "expert," but I know quite a bit about the following: ecology of plants and plant communities, earth science, basic biology, organic farming and conservation biology.
Why I teach
I teach because I am continually driven to continue learning new things and to deepen my understanding of the things I already know. I also enjoy helping other people learn about and broaden their understanding of the natural world and the interactions between it and society.
Favorite Book
As I write this, I am surrounded by three, six-foot-tall bookcases that are filled to overflowing. There are stacks of books on the floor, on a table, my desk, an end table and on top of the printer. I've probably given away or recycled half as many books as I have right now. I really don't have a favorite book, but books are certainly one of my favorite things. I joined my first book club in 8th grade, and I am currently in one now. History, science, the natural world, the classics, "how to," the environment and farming are among the most common topics.
Favorite film
Once I've seen a film, I rarely revisit it, but the Lord of the Rings was awfully good.
Best part of being at SVC
What I like about SVC is the setting, the informal atmosphere and working with "regular" folks.
