Research interests
I am a painter, mixed-media, handmade paper and ceramic artist who has exhibited in galleries, museums and other visual art events in New York and New England. My work is in several institutions and numerous private collections.
Why I teach
According to the Dutch abstract artist, Piet Mondrian, "the position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel." As a visual artist, I see myself as a medium through which others can perceive the depth and essential beauty, order and harmony of life. I carry this same philosophy into the teaching of students in my humanities and studio art courses. My energy, passion and interest are constantly renewed by assisting and providing guidance to students. Teaching is a process of revelation that is always regenerating itself. It is about the energy of the human experience.

Best part of being at SVC
The college is a small school that offers large opportunities for academic and personal growth. One of its best aspects is the close relationships between faculty and students. It is exciting to watch students evolve into mature professional adults who become solid, intelligent and productive members of their communities. As a faculty member, I’ve been privileged to know many personal stories of transformation that are truly meaningful and significant. And I am grateful for the experience.
HIGHLIGHTS
Professor Winterhalter was honored as a finalist for the Engaged Scholar Award at the Vermont Campus Compact Awards Recognition and Reception on April 1, 2009, at UVM.
