Sharief Hashim Hired to Head Southern Vermont College Men's Basketball JV Team, Work in Office of Admissions
April 13, 2014
Southern Vermont College Director of Athletics Michael McDonough announced this week the hire of Sharief Hashim to be the head coach of the newly-formed men’s basketball junior varsity team.
Hashim comes to Southern Vt. from the Maryland/Virginia area where he has taken on multiple roles over the last decade including the head coaching position for the varsity boys’ basketball team at Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Md., a post he was in since the 2008-09 season. He also worked as a recreational specialist for the Montgomery Country Recreation Department for five years and was a park and recreation specialist for the Fairfax County government in Va. over the last five months. Previous to those positions, Hashim worked as a special education para educator at two high schools in Md.
“I’m truly humbled and blessed to become a part of the SVC family,” said Hashim. “Coaching and leadership development are passions I take very seriously. Toughness and up-tempo team play are characteristics I believe to be important to winning in the sport of basketball. I’m excited and looking forward to working closely with Coach Engelstad and supporting the faculty and students at Southern Vermont College.”
Hashim reconnects with SVC head coach Dan Engelstad who will be entering his second year at the helm of the men’s basketball program in 2014-15. The two started their work on the court together back at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Md. where Hashim was the varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach for the three years Engelstad played at that level for the Vikings.
“I'm thrilled to add Coach Hashim to our basketball program,” commented Engelstad. “Not only does Sharief bring an incredibly high basketball IQ to the staff, but he’s been an invaluable recruiter. He embodies what our program is about. Sharief has an intensity on the floor, but he always has our student-athletes’ best interest at heart. As the head JV coach, he will be a great asset to our program and the SVC community.”
In addition, Hashim will serve as an admissions counselor in the Office of Admissions. In that role, he will be working with prospective students from a specific geographic area, representing SVC at college fairs, acting as the admissions-athletics liaison, and completing other special projects for the College.
Hashim received his Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management with a Counseling Psychology minor from Columbia Union College in 2008 and has just started taking courses for his Master of Science degree from Southern New Hampshire University with a concentration in Sports Management. In 2013, he was the recipient of the National Association of Counties’ Achievement Award for the Montgomery Country government in part for his work in supporting a successful partnership with MCPS high school students and the U.S. Navy Seals.
