Student Life
In addition to the Dean of Students Office, Student Life encompasses the following areas: Student Involvement & Leadership, Counseling, Dining Services, Health Services, Residential Life, and Campus Safety. The staff members of the Student Life department are available to assist students through the entire academic process. A variety of academic and non-academic support services are available to students that compliment and support each academic program. Issues, questions, or concerns about campus experiences may be brought to the Dean of Students for resolution. If the Dean cannot resolve the matter, he or she will assist in referring the student to the appropriate office or individual for resolution.
College is more than classroom lectures, homework, and exams. A college education is a total learning experience, providing the student with opportunities to develop leadership and community skills, build lifelong friendships, enhance personal and professional skills, and prepare for a fulfilling and successful life.
To assist the student in achieving this, Student Life must have a clearly defined purpose and direction. The following information provides students, parents and other interested individuals with Southern Vermont College's purpose and direction in Student Life.
Student life Mission
The Student Life mission is to provide programs and services that support and enhance the College's academic mission. Student Life creates and maintains programs, activities and services that provide for a student's personal and social development that foster a supportive academic environment. Student Life endeavors to support the student's realization of the College's academic outcomes.
Student life Philosophy
We believe that the efforts of the Student Life department are an integral part of the student's educational experience and development as a member of a community. These efforts are based on the following philosophical assumptions:
- There is a deep and abiding faith in the worth and dignity of the individual as the most important component of society, and therefore, of the College.
- Students are growing individuals capable of moving toward self-fulfillment and responsible social development. Their potential for both has only been partially realized.
- Students are free to choose their own direction and have responsibility for those choices.
