SVC Criminal Justice Professor Receives New York Unsung Hero in Government Award
Southern Vermont College (SVC) is proud to announce that Renee Zirpolo Merges, JD, Assistant Professor in The Donald Everett Axinn Division of Social Sciences, has been selected to receive the 2017 Unsung Hero in Government Award, one of four prestigious alumni in government awards given by Albany Law School and the Government Law Center. The award was presented to Merges at a special luncheon on Thursday, April 27, at the Albany Convention Center.
Professor Merges was chosen for this award from the work she has done as Assistant District Attorney at the Albany County Judicial Center due to her leadership and dramatic impact on lives of others in the area of government and public service without regard for personal gain.
“It has been an honor to work with colleagues who share a passion for justice to make our communities safer and stronger in Albany County,” said Merges. “It has been a special honor to mentor students through our programs with Albany Law School.” At SVC, Merges teaches Criminal Justice, Evidence and Court Procedures, and more. She has taken her SVC students to observe court in Albany on numerous occasions.
Merges received a Juris Doctorate degree from Albany Law School, Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany, and Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Law from Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
